I understand that employees of the sugar beet harvest are required to be capable of lifting 25-30 lbs. on a consistent basis. As well as the lifting, I am aware that the position requires that I am able to be either standing or walking for the majority of my shift and that it will be outdoors. (Each shift is up to 12 hours long, 7 days a week for as long as the harvest runs.) I am also aware that I may be asked to clean piling equipment and the surrounding area. HELPER AND SAMPLE TAKER Physical/Cognitive Requirements – When covering for the piler operator, the helper stands on an enclosed platform maneuvering the piler control switches. The helper/sample taker will lock out for repair work and use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers and hammers for repairs. The helper/sample taker will lock out the piler to assist in the cleanup operations of it. This person will sweep and shovel mud or beets. A shovel full of mud or beets weighs 10-15#. The sample taker will accurately fill and handle beet sample bags which weigh 25-30#. They will communicate with drivers to ensure safe and accurate unloading of trucks and return of tare. The helper will assist with handling of sample bags, which weigh 25-30#, and in accurately filling bags and communicating with truck drivers. The helper/sample taker will stand or walk a majority of the day. Bending and twisting may be done frequently during clean up operations. Shoveling will be done frequently. Squatting and kneeling will be done seldom. Maximum workload capacity each day is of moderate/heavy energy requirements. This employee must have the ability to see, hear, and read and interpret documents such as safety procedures, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. This employee must have the ability to understand and carry out basic written and oral instructions. PILER OPERATOR Physical/Cognitive Requirements – The piler operator stands on an enclosed platform maneuvering the piler control switches. The operator will lock out for repair work and use hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers and hammers for repairs. The piler operator will lock out the piler to supervise and assist in the cleanup operations of it. This person will assist the piler helpers with sweeping and shoveling mud or beets. A shovel full of mud or beets weighs 10-15#. Seldom will the operator handle sample bags, which weigh 25-30#. The operator will stand or walk a majority of the day. Bending and twisting will be done seldom as will squatting and kneeling. Shoveling will be done occasionally. Maximum workload capacity each day is of moderate energy requirements. This employee must have the ability to see, hear, and read and interpret documents such as safety procedures, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. This employee must have the ability to understand and carry out basic written and oral instructions. SKIDSTEER OPERATOR Physical/Cognitive Requirements – Lifting up to 50# occasionally (greater than 50#, using the lifting mechanism). Will walk/stand throughout the day. Must be able to climb up to skidsteer and wear seatbelt. Bending and twisting will be done occasionally while squatting and kneeling done infrequently. Maximum workload capacity each day is of moderate energy level. Must have the ability to see, hear, read, write and communicate effectively. Must demonstrate the ability to operate the skidsteer without product damage. WORK ENVIRONMENT OF THE PILER OPERATOR, HELPER, SAMPLE TAKER AND SKIDSTEER Employees are exposed to the outdoors, cold and hot temperatures, wind, rain, and perhaps snow. Piling season is usually finished by the end of October, however, in some extreme cases, it has gone into November. Exposure to moving equipment requires lockout procedures. There is exposure to dust and debris from harvest conditions. Typical shift is 12 hours per day, 7 days per week during a 3-6 week season. Personal protective equipment is required and must be worn as required and needed.
